Summer is a time for vacations, rest, and relaxation. It’s also a time to do some important maintenance around your home. Here are some tips to get your home prepared to weather the South Texas heat while keeping you cool. It’s a small investment that could save you a lot of time and money down the road.

Indoor To-Do’s:

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if necessary

  • Have your air conditioner inspected and serviced

  • Clean and inspect ceiling fans. Make sure fan blades are spinning counterclockwise to push cool air down and throughout your home

  • Have your chimney professionally cleaned

  • Change air conditioning filter

  • Check attic for leaks, moisture damage, and signs of pest infestation

  • Clean dryer vent and exhaust duct

Outdoor To-Do’s:

  • Clean out gutters and downspouts

  • Inspect exterior for holes or loose and rotten siding

  • Repair and repaint any chipped, cracking or faded exterior paint

  • Inspect caulking around windows and doors

  • Check for leaks in hoses and outdoor faucets

  • Wash windows

  • Mulch plants and trim back trees and vegetation around house and outdoor A/C unit

  • Pressure wash and reseal deck

  • Clean your grill

  • Inspect fence. Repair and re-stain if needed

  • Fill cracks in cement walkway or driveway
